🧠 Teaching as Mastery

The best way to truly learn a concept is to teach it to someone else. By building this Lexicon, you are proving to future employers that you don't just "use" these principles -- you own them.

The Career Edge

This film serves as a high-level proof of concept for your portfolio. It shows art directors that you understand the underlying physics and "why" behind every keyframe.

7-Week Production Timeline

Week 1: Identity & Storyboards

Mandatory: Define your Hero Shape or Hero Character. This is the visual anchor for the entire piece. Create your full storyboard defining the visual flow between principles.

Week 2: The Animatic

Focus: Timing and Script. Produce a full animatic including scratch VO, sound effect markers, and final narration. Your pacing is locked here.

Week 3-4: Core Physics

Scenes 1-5: Timing, Spacing, Eases, Mass, and Arcs. No shortcuts -- dial in every movement using the Value Graph to establish weight and intention.

Week 5-6: Liquid & Mastery

Scenes 6-9: Squash & Stretch, Overlapping Action, and Exaggeration. Layer in micro-animations and smears to add high-end polish and complexity.

Week 7: Final Audio & Render

The Final 50%: Replace scratch audio with high-fidelity SFX that reinforce the physical weight of your character. Color grade and export your final 4K/1080p film.

✨ Principle 10: Appeal (The Soul)

Appeal is not a "Week 6" task. It is a global principle that must be baked into your design from Week 1. Whether your hero is a simple circle or a 3D rig, it must have charisma, clear silhouettes, and a magnetic personality.

The Lexicon Checklist

10 Principles of Motion

  • 1. Timing/Spacing: The "Beat" of life.
  • 2. Eases: Realistic acceleration/friction.
  • 3. Mass/Weight: Does it feel heavy or light?
  • 4. Anticipation: The preparation for action.
  • 5. Arcs: Natural, non-linear movement.
  • 6. Squash/Stretch/Smears: Preserving volume.
  • 7. Follow Through: The inertia of parts.
  • 8. Exaggeration: Pushing reality for impact.
  • 9. Secondary Animation: Supporting details.
  • 10. Appeal: The overall charisma/design.
