Signature Project Launch

Choose your lane, define your subject, identify your audience, and build the creative foundation for your final Capstone 2 project.

The Goal

By the end of this week, your project should have direction. You are not animating yet. You are defining the professional container: lane, subject, audience, concept, research, moodboards, script outline, and storyboard plan.

Choose Your Lane

🧠 Important: These Are Separate Project Types

You are not choosing a theme color. You are choosing the kind of professional motion design project you want to build for your portfolio. Each lane has different goals, different deliverables, and a different type of portfolio value.

Lane 1: Brand Motion System

What this is: A motion design package for a brand, event, product, artist, nonprofit, app, company, or fictional identity. This lane is about making something feel branded, polished, consistent, and client-ready.

What you get out of it: A portfolio piece that looks like agency, studio, marketing, or brand design work. This is strong if you want to show typography, design systems, logo animation, campaign thinking, and professional polish.

Lane 2: Story / Explainer Film

What this is: A short animated piece that explains, teaches, reveals, or reframes an idea. This lane is about clarity, storytelling, pacing, visual metaphor, and making information easier to understand.

What you get out of it: A portfolio piece that proves you can communicate. This is strong if you want to show concept development, editorial thinking, writing, sequencing, voiceover, captions, and idea-driven animation.

Lane 3: Culture / Entertainment Package

What this is: A motion package for music, film, games, sports, fashion, streaming, events, social content, or an imagined media property. This lane is about energy, taste, mood, rhythm, and visual impact.

What you get out of it: A portfolio piece with personality and memorable style. This is strong if you want to show title design, trailers, openers, music-driven edits, event graphics, or entertainment branding.

This Week's Required Decisions

Part 1: Lane, Subject, Audience

  • Lane: Brand Motion System, Story / Explainer Film, or Culture / Entertainment Package.
  • Subject: What is the project actually about?
  • Audience: Who is this for, and what do they care about?
  • Purpose: What should the viewer feel, understand, or do?

Part 2: Project Brief

  • Write a short creative brief for your project.
  • Define the final deliverables you plan to make.
  • Identify the tone, style, and portfolio goal.
  • Explain why this project belongs in your graduating portfolio.

Part 3: Research + Moodboards

  • Collect visual references, motion references, type references, color, texture, and pacing examples.
  • Organize references by purpose, not random screenshots.
  • Label what each reference is teaching you.

Part 4: Written Concept + Script Outline + Storyboards

  • Write the core concept in plain language.
  • Draft a script, beat sheet, or section-by-section outline.
  • Begin storyboards showing the major visual beats.
  • Plan how the piece starts, builds, and resolves.
⚠️ Do Not Drift

If your project cannot be explained in one sentence by the end of this week, it is too vague. A strong Capstone project needs a clear subject, audience, and purpose before the design gets fancy.

Week 8 Checklist

  • Lane chosen: One of the three lanes is locked.
  • Subject chosen: Your project has a clear topic, brand, story, event, or property.
  • Audience defined: You know who you are designing for.
  • Creative brief drafted: Your direction is written down.
  • Research collected: Visual and motion references are organized.
  • Moodboards built: Style direction is becoming visible.
  • Concept written: Your idea has a clear explanation.
  • Boards started: Script outline and storyboard beats are underway.
