Boards, Styleframes, Motion Tests

Finish the storyboards, prove the look, test the motion language, and build an animatic before full production begins.

The Goal

This week turns the idea into a production blueprint. Your storyboards should be complete, your visual direction should be proven through styleframes, and your timing should be tested in an animatic.

Lane-Specific Targets

Lane 1: Brand Motion System

  • Storyboards: Show the brand reveal, value/message, key product or identity beats, and end card.
  • Styleframes: Prove logo/type treatment, color system, campaign look, and layout rules.
  • Motion test: Test the logo reveal, type animation, product transition, or graphic system behavior.
  • Animatic: Confirm the spot feels like a real brand piece, not a slideshow.

Lane 2: Story / Explainer Film

  • Storyboards: Show the full explanation arc: hook, setup, key points, and takeaway.
  • Styleframes: Prove the visual metaphor system, type/caption style, and information hierarchy.
  • Motion test: Test a diagram, transition, character/object behavior, or complex explanation moment.
  • Animatic: Confirm the story is understandable before final animation begins.

Lane 3: Culture / Entertainment Package

  • Storyboards: Show the major hype beats, mood shifts, title moments, and final payoff.
  • Styleframes: Prove the visual world, key art direction, typography, and tone.
  • Motion test: Test a title reveal, beat-synced transition, camera move, or high-impact visual effect.
  • Animatic: Confirm the edit has rhythm and energy, not just cool frames.

Part 1: Finished Storyboards

  • Show every major beat from beginning to end.
  • Include camera notes, type placement, transitions, and sound notes.
  • Make the structure clear enough that another designer could understand the plan.

Part 2: Styleframes

  • Create high-fidelity frames that prove the final visual direction.
  • Show typography, color, composition, texture, and graphic language.
  • Make sure the frames feel like one consistent system.

Part 3: Motion Tests

  • Test the hardest motion problem before production week.
  • Explore transitions, type behavior, character/shape movement, camera moves, or visual effects.
  • Keep tests short, focused, and useful.

Part 4: Animatic

  • Put the boards into a timeline with rough timing.
  • Add scratch VO, temp music, or sound cues if needed.
  • Use the animatic to find pacing problems before animation begins.
💡 Production Shortcut

If the animatic feels boring, the final animation will probably feel boring too. Fix pacing now while the project is still cheap to change.

Week 9 Checklist

  • Storyboards complete: Full beginning, middle, and ending.
  • Styleframes created: Final look is visible.
  • Motion test exported: A focused test proves the motion language.
  • Animatic assembled: Boards are timed in sequence.
  • Audio considered: Music, VO, or sound direction is planned.
  • Production plan clear: You know what to animate next week.
